Reuse Green When showing children how to reuse items to reduce waste, they will learn best if it is fun! Here is a great little project that can help teach them how to not only reuse old items and make them new again, but it is fun for them to do too. Items for project: Glue sticks, old Christmas card (or birthday, valentine's day or any other old cards that you or your family have received), recycled card quality construction paper, safety scissors, colored pencils, markers, or crayons. First make sure you have a large work area like your kitchen table. Have the children spread out and pick out two to four cards that they like the most. Have them cut the cards about a half inch down from the fold on the back part of the card. The back (signed) part of the card should be set aside for recycling, and the fronts should be kept for making new cards. Next, have the children, with your help, cut the construction paper to the same size of the front part of the card. Now the fronts can be glued to their "new" backs. Allow the children to write their own greetings inside of their new cards. These cards can be hand delivered to family and friends during the holidays. Another project idea is to create a collage with the old cards for the children to decorate their rooms with. For this project, the cards can be cut along the fold, and glued (front side up) onto recycled cardboard. Old yarn, fabric, and other old craft pieces can also be glued onto the cardboard to make borders. Remember, the goal here is to make sure the children are not only having fun, but learning to reuse old items to make something new. |
