Growing Green

This project make take a little bit of research, but the learning that you and the children will get out of it is well worth the time spent. Go online to your favorite search engine and find out which plants and grasses are native to your area. If you live in a normally dry region, you may be surprised at what will grow in your yard without the need for constant watering while still looking pretty and inviting.

Once you have found out about a few different plants and grasses, check with your local Eco-friendly garden centers to see if they have any available, or if they can provide you with growers that do have them. Plan out an area of your yard that will become your new native growing area. Have the children help you design the new area. This helps to not only give them ownership and responsibility of the area, but also teaches them how different plants can work together to benefit each other.

Invest in some attractive barrels, or other "rain catchers" that can be used to water your new growing area. Have the children help with watering the new plants and show them the difference in how much water is needed for the native plants versus the other flowers and plants that can be found in your yard. Show the children the savings not only in dollars off your water bill, but with how catching the rain fall allows the plants to get the water they need just from the rain.

Another bonus from a project like this can be the sudden influx of native birds, animals, and even butterflys that will start visiting your new garden area.
