Hells Canyon is the perfect place for
a fun filled family adventure.
Hells
Canyon is known as the deepest river gorge in North America. It plunges
down more than a mile below the Oregon rim and 8,000 feet below He
Devil Peak of the Seven Devils Mountains in Idaho. As a comparison, the
Empire State Building in New York City is 1,454 feet tall, so it would
take just over five and half Empire State Buildings to reach as high as
He Devil Peak.
If you have never been
on a jet boat tour of Hells Canyon, don't put it off any longer! You
can chose from a variety of trips to suit you and your family's desires
from a mail run trip to an extended stay in a lodge. If your family is
big on fishing, we have some of the best steelheading around!
There
is even more to see and do. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area has
over 652,488 acres full of fun and adventure. If a jet boat tour is not
in your future, then you can try your hand at horseback riding or
hiking thoughout some of the most beautiful county you could imagine.
Some
of the wonders you may see on your travels include big horn sheep,
mountain goats,
raptors, mountain lions, golden eagles and many different varieties of
wild flowers. You can travel backwards in time and view Indian
pictographs and petroglyphs throughout the canyon.
Some cautions for everyone:
- Always carry plenty of water. Though there
are many water sources, all water should be treated before drinking it.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
Rattlesnakes, ticks, and poision ivy are natural residents of this area.
- Pack
it in, pack it out. Help keep this beautiful area beautiful by making
sure that you pack out everything you pack in with you.
- Clothing
options. Due to sudden changes in weather and elevation, it is
always wise to bring both warm and cold weather clothing with you.
