NEWSFLASH: Rainforest = Life

Plants, leaves, trees, vines, jungles, canopy; these are some words that come to mind when we think of a rainforest. We think of a endless landscape vastly dominated by the color green with monkeys, snakes, and leopards to boot. But a rainforest contains so much more than meets the eye. In fact, over two thirds of all the animal and plant species on this earth can be found in the rain forest. Two thirds of all living things, that sounds like a big number. Well hold on to your boot-straps Sally because scientist estimate there are thousands upon millions of new species just waiting to be discovered !

Rain forest are often described as the "World's Largest Pharmacy" because of the plethora of natural medicines found there. Certain stimulants, tranquilizing drugs, and even the basic ingredients for hormonal contracentive are found in these vegitative wonderlands. Who knows, maybe the cure for cancer is just waiting to be found. Many of the world's foods are derived from the rainforests. For many years staples like coffee, bananas, sugar-cane, and chocolate have been harvested from rain forest all over the world. Now I ask you: where would our world be without birth-control, chocolate, and coffee. I can only imagine the mayhem in such a terrible situation. The lands would be overflowing with kids, not to mention the surplus of adolescent parents. There would be no Dutch Mafia, no Java Hut, and no chocolate to make those hot beverages taste yummy.

As you can probably imagine, many people flock to these natural wonders every year. The rain forest have become a a huge tourist attraction for their host countries. This tourism helps the coutries economies as well as creates enviromentally aware tourist. The revenue generated from rain forest tourism helps fund programs that protect the forest and everything in it."Why the need for protection", you ask. Believe it or not, many people wish to harm this wonderful environment.

DEFORESTATION: The Anti-Forest

The practice of deforestation is the act of turning forest land into non-forest land. People do this for a couple of reasons. Some for the natural resources the forest has to offer (i.e. timber) and others do it in order to expand their empire (i.e. construct new structures). About half of the mature tropical rainforest in the world have already been felled. That means between 750 and 800 million of the original 1.6 billion hectares of worldwide rainforest have been cleared for human consumption. At this rate, by 2030, nearly 80% of all rainforest lands will be demolished.
